Duties of a fire marshal

The  Duties of a fire marshal or fire warden

The duties of a fire marshal or fire warden can be varied. Therefore, any person  in this role must be aware of their responsibilities and tasks.

First of all, the role involves taking part in the fire plan and procedures. The plans should already be created and marshals will have carried out fire drills.

Also, other duties of a fire marshal may include checking that fire precautions and building corridors are safe to use. This will include making sure the means of escape is clear and that fire extinguishers are in place. In addition, checks may include emergency lighting and checking that fire exits open easily.

Some managers ask fire marshals to carry out simple fire training for new  and temporary staff. In addition, the training should include where exits and fire extinguishers are and fire evacuation plan.

Marshals  and wardens may be assisted by deputy marshals and these persons also need to be trained.

Fire training

Workplace fire training and fire drills should be carried out frequently. Fire marshal training could be yearly and fire drills every six months. Whatever the frequency the training should be based on the fire plans and a realistic fire scenario in the building.

Our fire marshal course will help marshals and wardens with their role. Furthermore, the training is an approved course and all persons on the course will receive a certificate.

The course includes:

  • Fire law and case histories.
  • Extinguishers and classes of fire.
  • Fire plans,  drills and how to account for people in a building.
  • Plans for disabled persons and those with reduced mobility.

Managers and persons  can view the fire marshal course  by following this link.

What does a fire warden and fire marshal do all day?

So, what does a fire warden and fire marshal do all day?

We were asked this question at a recent fire warden course! So, we asked the fire training course attendees what they thought and these are their answers:

  • They did their normal day job!
  • They would do a check of the area they work for hazards and availability of escape routes.
  • Checking that fire escape routes and fire exit doors are available and open.
  • Looking for problems and issues that might start a fire or hinder staff evacuation.
  • Checking fire safety measures such as fire alarm call points, fire extinguishers and fire doors in the building are not obstructed or interfered with.
  • Talking through fire safety issues to new persons and new starters in their area.
  • Making sure that the emergency lighting worked and fire alarm is heard when the building has its weekly test.
  • Taking part in fire drills as a fire warden or as an observer.
  • Carrying out there fire warden role and implementing the fire evacuation plan in the event of a fire alarm operating

We thought the course delegates produced the perfect fire marshal list and gave them an extra tea break! How do you think they did?
