fire training in schools

Fire training in schools should cover a full range of issues. This includes fire extinguishers, fire drills, hazard spotting and also plans for all school activities.

Schools should have fire evacuation plans for the following times: Normal school hours, breakfast club and also after school clubs. In addition there should be plans for activities such as school plays, parents evening and school fetes. There must also be plans if the school is hired by third parties and these should be shared with these persons. Finally, there should be a procedure when there is inclement weather. Children may be in different parts of the building and registers in different places!

Many schools adopt a roll call accounting method. This is ideal for schools who keep a regular register of pupils throughout the day. However, there should also be a sweep of the common areas. Furthermore a procedure for children who are late and en route to their classes may be useful. As well as accounting for children it is important to account for teachers so a separate register should also be used.

Breakfast clubs and after school activities also need fire procedures. There are usually a lot less children in the school during these periods. However there is also a lot less staff to manage persons in the building. It is important that parts of the school building are restricted during these times and that children are supervised by adults at all times.

Accounting for persons during school plays, parents evening and fetes will be done differently. An ideal procedure is a sweep system since there will not be an accurate list of persons in the premises. All staff must know there  roles for each of the above fire plans.
